A detailed pre-recorded voice messages listing specific instructions to adhere to in order to obtain certified copies of birth, death, marriage or divorce certificates. Travel instructions to the Division of Vital Records are available by calling the above member. Application for Certification of a Vital Record can be obtained from the Division of Vital Records, your local health department or the website. There are three ways in which to obtain a vital record in Virginia. Choose the method that best suits your needs: (1) Walk-in - Same day service is available to walk-in customers. This is the fastest way to obtain a birth certificate. When you arrive, you will complete an application, pay the $12 required fee, and show the processing clerk a valid photo I.D. (2) Express Service instructions - VitalChek Network - Obtain a certified copy of a birth, death, marriage or divorce certificate within 2-5 days through a courier service. A service charge must be paid by credit card. (3) Mail-in instructions - Turn around is estimated at 5 to 7 business days from the day the request is received. However, people are urged to allow sufficient time for delivery of the vital record. Checks or money orders should be made payable to State Department of Health. A fee of $12.00 is charged for each certification of a vital record or for a search of the files when no certification is made.

Application process
Customers may drop off a completed application for a vital record at the front desk. This can be mailed by Post Office mail to a given address or the applicant can be informed by phone when the certificate is ready for pick-up. The pick-up requests must be received no later than 2:00pm and will only be released to the requester.
