Description

Provides a free nutrition program for low-income pregnant and postpartum women infants and children to age 5. Recipients receive education, breast-feeding support, nutritional screening and specific foods. Free foods include milk, baby formula, eggs, dried beans, peanut butter, cheese, juice and cereal. WIC stands for the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children. The goal of the program is to improve the health of pregnant, postpartum and breastfeeding women and infants and children (under 5 years) through better nutrition and access to health care. The program is funded through the U.S. Department of Agriculture and operated in Virginia through the Virginia Department of Health. The program provides screening and referrals to other health, welfare and social service agencies, nutrition education, breastfeeding promotion and support as well as supplemental nutritious foods.
