The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (formerly the Food Stamp Program) provides a basic safety net to millions of people by providing monthly benefits to eligible low-income families which can be used to purchase food. Assistance is in the form of debit cards to help families increase their food purchasing power in order to alleviate hunger and malnutrition.
