Located within the Office of the Commonwealth's Attorney, the Program provides services to crime victims and witnesses in Bedford City/County in accordance with the Virginia Crime Victim and Witness Rights Act. Advocates work toward reducing the confusion, fear and anxiety that crime victims and witnesses have regarding the criminal justice system. Helps ensure that victims of crimes receive fair and compassionate treatment while participating in the criminal justice program.

Call the Victim/Witness Program if: *for questions about your role as a witness; *would like an explanation of court procedures or a courtroom tour before you testify; *want assistance filing for victims' compensation; *need a referral to social services agencies that provide emergency financial assistance; *would like someone to escort you to court; *have received crime related threats or harassment; *need information regarding the status of your case; *want a referral to legal aid. If you are the victim of a crime you may be entitled to the following: *PROTECTION: separate waiting area while your case is being heard. *FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE: prompt return of property being held as evidence as the conclusion of the case and information about filing for Crime Victims' Compensation. *NOTIFICATION: employer contact to ensure that you are excused from work while appearing in court as a victim or witness. Case status and disposition information about your case. Notification from a local jail or the penitentiary of the convicted assailant's release or name change. Notification from the Attorney General's Office of an appeal being granted (All upon written request which can be accomplished through the Victim/Witness Program) without cost to you. *VICTIM INPUT: submission of a victim impact statement after defendant's conviction. Direct assistance to replace broken locks or windows to better insure safety following a crime (limited funds-1st come, 1st serve basis). Aids to overcoming obstacles to appearing in court (transportation, baby-sitting).
Restitution Information- Aid victims in pursuit of court-ordered restitution.
Employer/School Intercession- If conflicts arise in obtaining time away from work or school, you may request assistance from this Program.
Victim Impact Statements- In felony cases, if the defendant is found guilty, the judge may withhold sentencing until a pre-sentence investigation is completed. This report provides information to the judge about the defendant's background and how the crime has impacted your life.
Crime Victims Compensation- Assistance in preparing and submitting the required application in order to receive compensation from the state for designated expenses incurred as a result of crime. Victims of violent crime, or their survivors, may be eligible for financial compensation for out-of-pocket medical expenses, psychological counseling, lost wages, or funeral expenses. Expenses covered by insurance are not covered.
Notification Assistance- If you would like to be notified when the defendant bonds out of jail or is otherwise released or transferred, please contact the Program office.
Personal Property Held as Evidence- You may call to gain information concerning the possibility of recovering your personal property.
