Pre-K classrooms are located in all elementary schools. Children are screened and served by rank order. Each classroom has one teacher, one assistant and a maximum of 16 children. The pre-k classrooms operate the same hours as grades K-5. Your child must be age 4 by September 30th. Provides childcare and education for very young children of income eligible working families in the New River Valley.
Preschool program runs concurrent with the Augusta County school calendar and is a full day program, 5 days a week except for one Friday of each month. This Friday is used for screenings, teacher trainings and home visits. Assessments for math and literacy are completed three times throughout the year to track students' progress and ensure preparedness for kindergarten. Head Start Preschool Center provides comprehensive education, health, nutrition, dental, mental health, social services and parent involvement opportunities to low-income children and their families.
Offers preschool across the county for 4-year-old children through our Virginia Preschool Initiative (VPI) and Title I classes and for 3- and 4-year olds in the Head Start program.

Preschool classes are offered for 2 year olds, 3 year olds, and 4 year olds. We provide Monday through Friday classes for all age groups. In addition, a Tuesday/Thursday class is offered for 2 year olds and a Monday/Wednesday/Friday class for 3 year olds. We offer two sessions of programming: the school year (September - June) and summer camp (June - August) After school care is offered for children in Kindergarten through 5th grade who attend Chittum Elementary, Western Branch Primary, and Western Branch Intermediate. Public school Kindergarten care is available before school (7:00-7:30 am) and after school (2:45-6:00 pm). Kindergarten care is not available during public school hours.

Roanoke City Public Schools offers two high quality programs for preschool children. The Virginia Preschool Initiative (VPI) Program serves children who are four years old by September 30th of the school year. Children are accepted based on educational need, family factors, and home address. For additional information regarding the VPI Program, call 540-853-2957. The REACH Program provides special education services for children ages two through four with developmental delays or disabilities. To qualify, preschoolers must have a developmental delay of 25% or more in an area of child development. To refer a child to REACH, call 540-853-1900. Our preschool programs are offered free of charge to eligible children. Classrooms are staffed by certified teachers and by instructional assistants. Bus transportation is provided.

YWCA Northeast Tennessee and Southwest Virgina is partnered with Ballad Health Systems to operate the Child Development Center on the campus of the Bristol Regional Medical Center. It was designed to serve the children of Ballad healthcare workers, however, additional openings are often available to parents in need of extended-hour child care within our community.
