Mecklenburg County Public Schools offers an alternative school program to assist students who are unable to complete their education in a traditional manner in the public school setting. Students referred to the alternative school will continue their academic classes using NovaNet. NovaNet is a computerized, web-based curriculum that meets the Virginia Standards of Learning. The Secondary GED preparation program is an option for students 18 years of age and younger who require a nontraditional program because they are academically at-risk and/or a potential dropout. This program is designed to provide students with the academic knowledge necessary to pass the GED test.

Middle Peninsula Regional Adult Continuing Education provides instruction to adults to improve basic academic skills (reading, writing, and math), GED Preparation (for high school equivalency) and ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages). Middle Peninsula Regional Adult & Career Education (R.A.C.E.) is a Consortium made up of the public school systems in the counties of Essex, Gloucester, King & Queen, King William, Mathews, and Middlesex, and the Town of West Point. It is one of the 22 Federal and State funded adult basic education programs serving the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Offers free basic skills instruction to adult students,18 and older, living in the counties of Buchanan, Dickenson, Russell, and Tazewell in Virginia. Programs are designed to meet the needs of adults who have not completed high school. Classes are offered in Adult Basic Education/Pre-GED and GED preparation. All classes are free and are conveniently located throughout the region. Offer several certification classes including CNA, Welding, Paraprofessional and ServSafe.
