Assists epidemiologists with investigations of communicable disease outbreaks in the community and provides education to the community about prevention and protection; provides immunizations in a clinical setting as well as the community; provides follow up care for people who require medical treatment for Tuberculosis infection or disease. Investigation of communicable disease, counseling and referral are offered. Sexually Transmitted diseases are treated on a walk-in basis in each department. Childhood immunizations and certain adult immunizations are offered at no cost. Foreign travel immunizations are available for a small fee. Immunizations are offered daily in each office and some evenings.
Investigates animal-to-man bites, domestic animal exposures and quarantines suspected rabid animals. Prepares and delivers samples for rabies examination. Works with other organizations to set-up rabies vaccinations clinics. Conducts rabies control activities including investigations of all animal bites.
TB program provides services to Henrico residents of all ages that are TB suspects, TB cases, contacts of TB cases, symptomatic of TB, and evaluation of positive TB skin tests, positive IGRA (Interferon Gamma Release Assay) or abnormal chest x-ray suggesting TB. Evaluates clients with signs/symptoms of TB. Language line available for all languages.

Services include screening, diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up of all persons exposed to specific diseases: tuberculosis (TB), sexually transmitted infections (STIs), HIV/AIDS, foodborne illnesses, etc. Information is given regarding preventing disease, recognizing symptoms, and obtaining treatment. Free Hepatitis B & Hepatitis C testing available.

Investigates unusual numbers or circumstances of a variety of certain illnesses and conditions, which are reported to the health department. By law, several infectious communicable diseases and certain other conditions must be reported by local physicians, hospitals, and labs. A team of Environmental Health Specialists, Public Health Nurses, Epidemiologists, and the Physician Health Director leads these investigations. When outbreaks are believed to be food or water borne, identification and testing of the potential sources in food and water may be conducted in order to identify the cause of the illness. Education of the public is provided to minimize risk of future outbreaks. Advise potentially rabies exposed persons, in consultation with their physician and the Health Director, regarding post-exposure treatment. Whenever a human being sustains an exposure to a mammal in such a manner as rabies is a concern the health department should be notified as soon as possible after the exposure occurs. May assist in providing pre-exposure treatment for rabies to persons potentially at-risk to occupational exposure to rabies.
