Enforces the City animal control ordinances and all other state laws and city ordinances. Officers are certified police officers and possess certifications in euthanasia. Officers also perform the deer reduction program. This unit operates the Salem Animal Shelter. Provides an Animal Welfare League whose mission is to rescue every unwanted, abandoned, abused, or neglected dog in our county. Attempts to do whatever is necessary to relieve any suffering, and to help each animal become healthy, sterilized, well-adjusted, and happily re-homed.

The Louisa County Animal Shelter operates under guidelines of the Commonwealth of Virginia providing humane sheltering, care, adoption, and redemption of stray and surrendered animals. Encourage spay/neuter of animals, increase the public awareness by educating citizens on responsible pet ownership, and to prevent any form of animal cruelty. A county pound and must maintain a few open runs for new intakes at all times. When filled up we work very hard not to euthanize for space by calling out to adopters and rescues for help.

Richmond Animal Care & Control (RACC) is an open admission public shelter. RACC provides humane care for stray, injured, lost, abused, and abandoned pets. The Animal Control staff investigates animal cruelty, enforces humane laws, and issues pet licenses. RACC has pets available for adoption.

Provides a humane society for Madison County. The Madison County Humane Society has a limited selection of dogs and cats. Assist other area shelters and take animals from individuals. All of these animals need someone with whom to share their lives. Appropriate homes are located for these animals after the animals receive necessary medical attention and are spayed/neutered. Adoptions are currently done at Fairlakes PetSmart & Potomac Yards PetSmart. Also offers spay/neuter assistance to individuals. The Madison County Humane Society needs you! Duties include answering citizen complaints, catching stray, dangerous or destructive dogs, investigating livestock damage or death for compensation claims, investigating possible animal cruelty, neglect, or abandonment, assisting other law enforcement agencies, Conservation Police and Fire & Rescue personnel with animal related calls, maintaining the Animal Shelter and euthanizing animals when necessary

The Shelter strives to encourage, promote, and preserve responsible pet ownership and to prevent any form of cruelty to animals.
The Animal Welfare League of Alexandria operate the Vola Lawson Animal Shelter, an open-admission facility accepting any and all animals brought to us from within the jurisdiction. AWLA have made a commitment to help animals in need with the help of the community. AWLA care for more than 2,000 animals per year, including dogs, cats, rabbits, guinea pigs, birds, iguanas and chinchillas. Specially-trained staff also assist area wildlife that have been injured or are in distress, with the ultimate goal of releasing them back into their natural habitat or transferring them to licensed wildlife rehabilitators for care and eventual release.
