Mental Health Skill-Building Services (MHSS) works collaboratively with adults, age 18 years and older, to build skills that promote self-determination and empowerment. It provides training and education to assist individuals as they work towards stability, independent living, and bettering their daily lives. Individuals eligible for this service may have a dual diagnosis of either mental illness and intellectual disability or mental illness and substance use disorder.

Vision Impaired - Norfolk, Norfolk Regional Office, Virginia Department for the Blind and Vision Impaired

DBVI provides services and resources which empower individuals who are blind, vision impaired or deafblind to achieve their desired levels of employment, education, and personal independence. Services are provided through 4 main programs: Vocational Rehabilitation, Rehabilitation Teaching and Independent Living, Low Vision Services and Education Services. Most services are provided in the person's home, school, or workplace. Referrals are accepted from individuals, families, schools, doctors, and other community partners.

VFS Mental Health Skills-Building Services are designed to assist individuals with achieving and maintaining community stability and independence in the most appropriate, least restrictive environment. Adult Day Services - Mineral, Friendly Oaks Center, Region Ten Community Services Board

These programs serve people who are recovering from mental illness by providing a safe and supportive environment that promotes independent living, social and interpersonal skills, and relapse prevention. Attending daily classes provides education about mental illness, substance use, and appropriate medication. Engaging in volunteering opportunities and engaging in social activities promotes empowerment, recovery, and competency. Services include: Face-to-face Service Specific Provider Intake (SSPI) that identifies treatment needs Development of Individualized Service Plans (ISP) which identify an individual's needs and goals in the area of mental health recovery and stability in the community Psycho-educational activities to teach about mental illness and appropriate medication to avoid complications and relapse Social skills training, peer support, and community resource development to promote empowerment, recovery, and competency Opportunities to learn and use independent living skills, and to enhance social and interpersonal skills Field trips to provide training in an integrated setting in order to increase an individual's understanding or ability to access community resources and meet goals outlined in the ISP

A center and community based program for people with intellectual disabilities that serves ages 12 years through adulthood. Provides supports, as identified in Individual Support Plans, to increase socialization, adaptive skills, communication, and more through the use of community resources (field trips, volunteer opportunities, etc) and center-based activities (arts and crafts, personal hygiene education, horticulture, etc.).

Good Shepherdof Northern Virginia provide appropriate resources to prevent or address homelessness and teach life skills required to help individuals and families return to stability for long term success. The Six Steps to Self-Sufficiency program is an intensive case management approach to goal-setting for long term achievement of stability for households.

Travel Training - Arlington, ENDependence Center of Northern Virginia

The ECNV Travel Training program is for people with disabilities who want to learn to travel safely and independently using public transportation in the Washington Metropolitan Area. Through the multi-day program that is comprehensive and individualized, individuals will learn a variety of travel skills that will enable them to ride local transportation independently. The Travel Trainers will work with individuals to learn transit routes to travel anywhere within the Washington, D.C. metro area.

Services are designed to meet the needs of clients experiencing difficulties in their lives due to emotional, behavioral, and mental health issues. Provide transitional support and stabilization services to clients returning to the community from a more restrictive environment. The Virginia Rehabilitation Center for the Blind and Vision Impaired (VRCBVI) helps people who are blind or vision impaired learn skills to live and work independently in a residential training facility. We believe that blindness should not stop anyone from having a job or living a full life. Our training programs focus on building confidence, independence, and self-sufficiency. Students learn important daily living and mobility skills in a supportive environment that encourages teamwork and open communication. Training is customized to meet each person's goals, and we also offer group programs like the LIFE program for teens and young adults and the Senior Retreat for people age 55 and older.

Inclusion & Disability Services - Fairfax, Pozez Jewish Community Center of Northern Virginia

The Pozez JCC of Northern Virginia's Special Needs Program offers unique programming for individuals with special needs. The program is designed to develop physical and social skills by uniquely combining therapeutic sessions with inclusion programs. The program features small participant-staff ratios and offers social programs, family events and recreational social skills classes. During the pandemic, programs are primarily offered virtually, however, social skills classes are offered in-person with safety measures in place.

Counseling - Charlottesville, Community Attention

The program serves children between the ages of 10 and 18. The program implements individual and group counseling services to teach adolescents life skills. Provides employment coaching as well as coordination of therapeutic services. The program is participant focused but works to involve the parents in treatment planning. The frequency and intensity of the contacts with the Youth Counselor are determined according to the individual needs of the participants. Youth typically are in the program and monitored between 2 and 6 months. Community Attention works in conjunction with the 16th District Court Services Unit to provide Electronic Monitoring, Assessment, and Diversion services to Charlottesville and Albemarle County. Independent Living Skills - Roanoke, DePaul Community Resources

Offers youth, ages 17-21, an opportunity to live in an apartment setting and begin to learn the skills necessary to transition to adulthood. The Independent Living program provides individual and group training opportunities to help youth develop practical life skills and achieve educational and employment goals. Nonresidential Independent Living Skill Training is also available on an individual and group basis for youth not placed in our program.

Independent Living - Rocky Mount, Franklin County Social Services

Foster teens who are at least 16 years of age. This program varies from year to year depending on the needs of the teens and the funding available from the State. Based on needs identified through an Independent Living Needs Assessment, the teens receive counseling and participate in group activities regarding subjects that will assist them in becoming competent adults and self-sufficient, productive citizens.

Meadowcreek Day Activity provides training and assistance to adults with developmental disabilities to acquire, improve and maintain functional abilities, while also achieving social integration with peers and the community. Meadowcreek Day Support provides opportunities for individuals to pursue personal interests and strengths in the community through art, music, technology, self-advocacy, and wellness. Meadowcreek coordinates with a variety of community-based services, including Charlottesville Parks & Recreation, Access Arts, Madison House, Meals On Wheels, Best Buddies, and Salvation Army.
