To control and prevent the spread of communicable disease from the person infected to other people in the community. To accomplish this we investigate any communicable diseases that pose a public health problem, this includes food borne illnesses, waterborne illnesses, tuberculosis, and other communicable diseases.

The control of communicable diseases is a key means by which the Loudoun County Health Department works to ensure the health and well-being of its residents. This is accomplished through: disease surveillance and follow-up of reportable diseases, epidemiologic investigations, administering immunizations for vaccine-preventable disease, and testing and treatment of tuberculosis, sexually-transmitted diseases and HIV. The department also works to manage environmental public health issues including vector control and food protection.

The goal of the tuberculosis control program is to prevent the spread of the disease tuberculosis in the community by identifying illness, providing treatment, and taking actions to prevent the spread of disease.

Screening, diagnosis, treatment, and follow up of people exposed to tuberculosis (TB).

The district offers assistance and refers clients who have been exposed to tuberculosis for chest x-rays, follow-up and medicines as needed. Sexually transmitted diseases can be treated at the clinics, free of charge. Free confidential HIV testing and counseling also is available. Communicable disease investigation, surveillance and control is a district service. The district is actively involved in disaster planning, including possible bio terrorist events and conducts investigations of suspected food and water borne outbreaks, conducts surveillance and provides guidance for rabies exposure.

Provides medication assistance to qualified individuals to purchase appropriate medication to treat TB disease, as well as monitoring lab, case management.
